Festivals of India

India is not a country buta sub-continent in itself. It is a land of many religions, faiths, linguistic and cultural groups. Moreover, there are many tribal groups spreading over the length and breadth of India. India is a land of amazingdiversity. People of India celebrate their lives through various festivals. India is a land of festivals. These festivals add colour and grandeur to the social and cultural lives of the people. Let's not forget that India has been predominantly an agricultural country. It is no exaggeration that the soul of India lives in its villages. The agrarian society based its festivals and celebrations on the cycle of seasons, crops and harvests. The Hindus and the Sikhs have most of their festivals based on seasons, sowing and harvesting of crops. Pongal celebrations in the South correspond to the harvesting of paddy in the fields. Similarly, Bihu festivals in Assam are festivals of harvesting. Baisakhi festival in Punjab and Haryana heralds the harvesting of wheat crops in the area. The Teej is a festival of the rainy season and is widely celebrated in Haryana, UP and Punjab. Lohri and Sankranti are festivals of the winter season. The Muslims in India have their own festivals. The Id-ul-fitur and Id-ul-zuha are the leading festivals of India. Christians in India celebrate Christmas and the New Year with their Hindu and Muslim brothers. The Hindus have two grand festivals which they celebrate with the people of different religions. The festival of Light or the Deepawali is the grandest festival of the Hindus. Similarly, Holi, the festival of colours,theJanmasthami,the Mahashivratri are the other noticeable festivals of the Hindus. Buddha-Purnima is celebrated reverently by both the Boddhs as well as the Hindus. The Jains celebrate Mahavir Jayanti and the Sikhs celebrate Guru Nanak Jayanti by holding colorful processions through the main street of towns and cities. These festivals reflect the true spirit of India and keep the vibrant culture and traditions of India alive forever.
