"Making Women Feel Safe"

So long it has been a male dominated world. No doubt, more and more wome coming out of their homes to go to their places of work. They are exposed to a larger world which doesn't guarantee their safety and security. They don't feel safe on the road, at their places of work and even at home. Why do they feel so? It is the old and outdated male mindset that creates many such problems. Even Delhi has become a crime capital for women. Cases of teasing, snatching, molesting, rapes and even murders are quite frequent in the capital. The gang rape in the Nirbhaya case aroused the conscience of the people. There was a wide-spread movement supporting the urgent need of keeping women feel safe and secure on roads, at places of work and even at home. The Verma Commission made comprehensive changes in the existing laws concerning women. The laws were given more teeth and provisions were made to give exemplary punishments to the offenders.

How can we make women feel safe? Merely by enacting laws? No doubt, the enforcement of the laws is important. But the most important thing that can bring a revolutionary change in the situation is the attitude of men towards women. There is an urgent need to change the mindset and their attitude towards women. Women demand no mercy. They want justice and equality. Let us stop having double standards. We can't have different values and standards for our sisters, mothers and members of our own families and different values for other women. Every woman is a sister or a mother of someone. Her person and character need to be protected and respected. She is an equal partner of man in all walks of life and hence, must be treated accordingly. Let us not forget the old saying that a gentleman is judged by the mindset he has towards women.
