       The Importance of Public Transport

Urban prosperity has created fresh problems. The rising middle class considers t status symbol to own new and expensive cars and vehicles. The number of two-wheeles has gone manifolds in recent years. Taxies, three wheelers, trucks and other private cabs have blocked the smooth movement of vehicles on roads. Increase in the number of private vehicles has caused problems like rising air pollution, traffic jams, lack of parking space, road rage etc. These are difficult problems and demand immediate solutions. The only solution lies in the use of public transport. Only a good and comfortable public transport can avoid problems like rising air pollution, traffic jams and incidents of road rage.

The capital of India, New Delhi, is one of the most polluted cities of the world. The introduction of the Odd-Even Formula evoked a sympathetic response from the public. No doubt it helped to decongest the roads but there was only a marginal success in reducing the pollution level. However, the scheme could have been a spectacular success if there had been a better public transport. Fortunately, the need for a good adequate and comfortable public transport has been recognised. If the number of private vehicles is to be reduced, the masses must enjoy better public transport. The number of buses on roads must be increased manifolds. The public transport must cater to the demands of different sections of society. Students must get concessional public transport to go to schools and colleges. The office goers must get adequate bus and metro services. The importance of metro in big cities can't be underestimated. The success of Delhi Metro has opened the way for the same experiment in cities like Bengaluru and Hyderabad. Public transport, if made more comfortable and cosy, can meet the demands of the more Lab affluent sections of society. People don't bother to pay more if they get more comfort and safety. A good public transport will certainly lead to reduction in the number of private vehicles. It will also reduce rising air pollution and traffic jams. Decongestion on roads will reduce the number of unpleasant incidents of road rage too.
