Sub: Improving living conditions in slums Sir,

Through the columns of your esteemed daily, I want to highlight the miserable lives of the people living in slums. These slums have become islands of dirt and diseases. Their presence is a great danger to the mental and physical health of our cities and the city dwellers. If no concrete steps are taken, stink and dirt of slums will swallow our fair cities.

Lack of job opportunities in the rural areas is forcing people to migrate to cities. Farming and agriculture is no more a profitable profession for small and marginalised farmers. Hence, gradually all our big cities are turning into clusters of slums. This forced migration leads to unplanned colonies. There is no provision for pure drinking water, sewage and electricity. These slums have become abodes of criminals and anti social elements. In the absence of gainful employment, the people living in slums are forced to lead a miserable life. Gambling, drinking and even prostitution find acceptance in such a society. For political leaders, the people living in slums are nothing more than their respective vote-banks. They become active only during elections and leave them to their fates after they are over. The immediate task for our municipalities and corporations is to improve the living conditions of these slums. Constructing low-cost flats instead of huts would mean giving them proper shelter against cold and rain. There should be a proper drainage and sewage system. Electricity and drinking water must be available to every home. Slum dwellers must get gainful employment or loans on easy terms. Only a concerted effort on the part of the concerned authorities and a strong political action can make these slums suitable places for human habitation.

Yours sincerely

Abhi/Asha
